Parker School recently announced a new scholarship that will be available for ninth-grade applicants for the 2015-16 school year.
The Lori Ann K. Kim, O.D. Scholarship is a $7,000 per year scholarship and was established by Lori Ann K. Kim in honor of her colleague, longtime Waimea optometrist Kenneth J. Fischer, O.D.
Fischer has been involved with Parker School since its inception in 1976, serving as a board member and supporter for many years.
“I am blessed to work with an amazing colleague and mentor, Dr. Kenneth Fischer,” Kim said. “He truly believes education is the foundation upon which we build our future and has worked tirelessly for the advancement of Parker School and the children of our community. Because of my hard-working parents, inspiration from Dr. Fischer, and being a recipient of four free years of an extraordinary education at Kamehameha Schools, today, I am very fortunate to be able to provide a similar opportunity to students of the Big Island. Hopefully, one day they, too, will do well and contribute to the education and success of our future keiki.”
The recipient of the scholarship must be a freshman new to Parker School; must display academic promise, model good citizenship and demonstrate an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); demonstrate financial need; and earn a 3.0 grade point average to have the scholarship renewed annually.
Preference will be given to female residents of North Kohala.
The scholarship will be renewed each year of the recipient’s Parker School career as long as the above criteria are met. The deadline to apply is Feb. 2.
